Todd Wilson Galatians: Gospel-rooted Living free this month

Logos Bible software is making Wilson’s commentary in Crossway’s Preaching the Word series free this month. I didn’t own this so I’m happy to pick it up. Wilson has a PhD from Cambridge and I see the book also boasts blurbs from Douglas Moo and Michael Bird so it should have some solid material although it is obviously aimed at preachers rather than scholars. Head on over there to pick it up and check out the other discounted books.

Review of Thomas R. Schreiner’s commentary available

Schreiner, Thomas R. Galatians. Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament, 9. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2010. 0310243726, 9780310243724.

David Luckensmeyer of Australian Catholic University has reviewed Schreiner’s commentary and you can read all about it on bookreviews.org: http://www.bookreviews.org/pdf/7879_8605.pdf

This review is most concerned with the physical layout of the commentary and editorial issues and secondly with critiquing with Schreiner’s Baptist presuppositions. In summary “Schreiner offers a reasonable analysis of most verses …. it is the ideological tendencies of the author that mar an otherwise very readable commentary on Galatians.” One is left to conclude that conservatives will love this commentary whilst others will find it lacking.

Gordon Fee interviewed

Nijay Gupta has posted an interview with Gordon Fee regarding his Galatians commentary in the Pentecostal Commentary series. It’s quite a short interview but you might be interested to know that other than his own commentary, Fee recommends Dunn and Bruce.

Regula Fidei Commentaries

Scot McKnight has announced that he is the general editor of a new commentary series to be based on the NIV 2011 translation. The series “will focus on explaining the New Testament books in the context of the Bible’s Story and discerning how to ‘live the Story’ in our world today.” It sounds similar to what Zondervan did with the NIVAC series but will surely have a different structure.

Mike Bird mentions that Joel Willitts of North Park University will be authoring the Galatians volume. Willitts has only published a couple of articles on Galatians, both dealing with the connection between the OT and Galatians:

Willitts, Joel. “Context Matters: Paul’s Use of Leviticus 18:5 in Galatians 3:12.” Tyndale Bulletin. 54:2 (2003): 105-122.

Willitts, Joel. “Isa 54,1 in Gal 4,24b–27: Reading Genesis in Light of Isaiah.” Zeitschrift für die Neutestamentliche Wissenschaft und die Kunde der älteren Kirche. 96:3/4 (2005): 188-210.

Evangelical Exegetical Commentary

Rod Decker has posted about his authoring the Mark volume for the new Evangelical Exegetical Commentary series. I hopped over to see who was doing the Galatians volume but they are “still looking.” I’m not sure why I haven’t been contact yet – It must be an oversight ;-).

If any of you are into Galatians and feel like taking on this task, Wayne House is the general editor and Hall Harris the NT editor. Rod says that this series is “‘between BECNT and WBC’ in terms of content and academic level.” Douglas Moo is working on the as yet unreleased BECNT and Richard Longenecker did the WBC volume so this had better be good!

Antique Commentary Notes

I stumbled across Chuck Grantham’s Antique Commentary Notes on Galatians today. He has put a lot of work into pasting selections from Luther, Calvin, Gill, etc. Here is the link for his post on chapter five. He’s a “Southern Baptist of the Calvinist kind” so naturally his selected of material leans in that direction.
