A couple items of note

Stephen C. Carlson has compared Swanson’s collation with Codex Alexandrinus (A) and is quite impressed with the results. He notes only two minor issues one of which also concerns NA28.

Elsewhere Ken Schenck has continued his series on the faith of Jesus, discussing Romans and Galatians.

Michael Whitenton on Πίστις Χριστοῦ again

Today Michael announced the availability of his article on πίστις Χριστοῦ in the apostolic fathers. Thanks for making that available Michael! Without giving away any of his argument he concludes:

“This evidence does not end the long-standing debate over the meaning of the πίστις Χριστοῦ passages in Paul; yet, I believe it does go a long way to assuage the deafening silence that has been used to drown out a subjective construal.”

I’m not sure how he quantifies “deafening silence” as my bibliography of this topic includes dozens of articles supporting the subjective understanding but perhaps he means within his context.

Michael R. Whitenton, “After ΠΙΣΤΙΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ: Neglected Evidence from the Apostolic Fathers.” Journal of Theological Studies. ?:? (2010): ?-?.

This article follows on the heals of another article on this subject co-written with Michael Bird:
Michael F. Bird and Michael R. Whitenton. “The Faithfulness of Jesus Christ in Hippolytus’s De Christo et Antichristo: Overlooked Patristic Evidence in the Πίστις Χριστοῦ Debate.” New Testament Studies. 55:4 (2009): 552-562.

UPDATE March 17, 2010. Loren Rosson III posted a lengthy interaction with Whitenton’s article today.

Peterman on Galatians 2:16

The latest issue of NTS (which is available for free online) has this article by Gerald Peterman

Gerald W. Peterman, “Δικαιωθῆναι διὰ τῆς ἐκ Χριστοῦ πίστ1ως: Notes on a Neglected Greek Construction.” New Testament Studies. 56:1 (2010): 163-168.

Of interest to us is his concluding question and statement: “If, in Gal 2.16 for instance, Paul had wanted to speak, not of faith in Christ, but rather of Christ’s faithfulness, why did he not say καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐπιστεύσαμεν, ἵνα δικαιωθῶμεν διὰ τῆς ἐκ Χριστοῦ πίστεως? Such wording would spark debate as to whether ἐκ Χριστοῦ indicates the subject of πίστις or its source, but Christ as object of πίστις in Gal 2.16 would be excluded from consideration” (168).

Kyuseok Han available for download

The British Library EThOS service now has another dissertation on Galatians available. Without giving away his conclusion let me just mention that on my birthday I like to have my cake and eat it too ;-) .

Kyuseok Han, Pauline Soteriology in Galatians with Special Reference to ΠΙΣΤΙΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ. PhD; University of Birmingham, 2006.

Due to some problems rendering Greek in the EThOS system this dissertation is actually listed twice so be sure to download dissertation 62627 as the other listing is void. Hopefully they will get this fixed.
